Tacomans to rally for no museum cuts

Groups in Tacoma and Spokane are joining forces to stave off the closure of state museums in their cities.

Gov. Chris Gregoire has proposed closing the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane to save money as the state faces a massive deficit.

Tacoma officials tell The News Tribune that if legislators approve the cut, the museum will either have to dramatically raise more money or mothball its collections.

Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland says the historical museum — the city’s former Union Station — is a key part of downtown Tacoma’s redevelopment.
